How can I contribute to my local community?

You could join a Rotary Club.

As a member of a Rotary club, you would be able to participate in its service activities some of which will be locally focused. Your contribution may be directly “hands on” or it may be in the generation of funds for a project or in helping manage the project.

How can I contribute to the wider community?

In the same way as contributing to local communities. Rotary involves itself at all levels of service – local, national and international.

What is Rotary?

It is a secular organization open to all persons regardless of race, colour, creed, religion, gender, or political preference. There are 34,282 clubs and over 1.2 million members worldwide.[1] The members of Rotary Clubs are known as Rotarians. Members usually meet weekly for breakfast, lunch or dinner, which is a social event as well as an opportunity to organize work on their service goals.

Rotary's primary motto is "Service Above Self"; its secondary motto is, "One profits most who serves best".

What is the main objective of Rotary?

Rotary’s objectives are to provide community service within the communities in which the clubs are located, to provide humanitarian aid at national & international levels, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

What is the dress code?

Anything from smart casual to business suit. You choose, it’s pretty flexible.

Is the club social and people friendly?

It certainly is. Meetings are cheerful, casual and very conducive to forming friendships. We still have members who have been enjoying Rotary since the club started nearly 40 years ago and many members have forged great friendships that extend way beyond their Rotary connections.

What if I am unable to attend some meetings.

We understand very well that most people live busy lives.

What about the gender issue?

In days gone by, Rotary was a men only organization. Thankfully, this changed 20 years ago and clubs now actively seek a good mix of male and female members. 

What is the typical age of a Rotary member?

There is no longer a “typical” age. We have members ranging from their 30’s to 80’s and we are tending to attract more members these days in the lower part of that range.

How does Rotary differ from other community service groups?

The extent of Rotary’s internationality is probably its most distinctive feature. Rotary is enormous, with clubs in more than 190 countries. Much of the major work done by Rotary involves the Rotary Foundation which is the biggest private charitable foundation in the world.

What are the differences between Rotary clubs?

Rotary is an international organization with clubs in over 190 countries. It is divided into Rotary Districts each of which will have about 60 clubs. Our District 9800 has clubs based in Melbourne city, the suburbs and many large and small country towns up as far as the Murray River.

Every Rotary club has a character and personality that reflects the interests of its members. No two clubs are identical.

Can I visit a few clubs to meet people without making a commitment?

Yes, Rotary meetings at all clubs are open to anyone who has an interest & wants to explore opportunities.

How much does it cost to be a Rotarian

There is a once only joining fee of $75 and the annual membership fee is currently $305. New members will only pay a pro-rata portion of the membership based on the date of joining during the July to June Rotary year.

Our meetings include a full dinner which currently costs $30. Drinks are available at bar costs.
