Rotary’s Fight to End Polio
For more than 35 years, Rotary has been at the forefront of the global effort to end polio. Since the launch of PolioPlus in 1985, Rotary, together with partners like the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, has helped reduce polio cases worldwide by more than 99.9%. Millions of children who might otherwise have been paralyzed by the disease are now living healthy, polio-free lives.
Today, polio remains endemic in just a few pockets of the world. But eliminating those final cases is the hardest step — and it demands persistence, resources, and global cooperation.
Recently, the fight has faced an extra hurdle with the reduction of U.S. government aid to the program. This has created funding pressures at a critical time, just as we are closer than ever to eradication. Rotary and its partners are working tirelessly to close that gap, but support from individuals, communities, and governments remains vital.
Ending polio is still within our reach — but only if we maintain the commitment to finish the job. Every contribution, every voice, and every show of support matters. Together, we can ensure that no child, anywhere, will ever again suffer from polio.
