Election Day BBQ at Genazzano – A great success, with strong support from members and the community.
Bo Cui welcomed as our newest member.
Club Meeting Highlight – Clifford Cookson from ReadyTechGo delivered an insightful presentation on Scam Watch. A topic well worth exploring further as a future Club forum.
We also joined in celebrating North Balwyn Rotary’s 45th Birthday –
Over 100 guests attended, including representatives from their Parent Club (Balwyn) and Grandparent Club (Camberwell).
A special highlight was the performance by our opera-singing District Governor, Michael Lapina – a truly memorable evening.
Looking Ahead
Next week is a pivotal moment for the future of Balwyn Rotary:
Presentation of the Strategic Planning Committee Report
Club Vote on Establishing a Balwyn Rotary Satellite Club
Special guest: District Governor Michael Lapina
This is a key milestone in shaping our club’s future direction, and I encourage all members to attend and be part of the decision-making.
Looking forward to seeing you there!
13-MAY: STRATEGIC PLAN UPDATE
The Strategic Planning Team will share the latest developments and insights from their ongoing work
Bo Cui’s life journey is a remarkable blend of resilience, intellect, and quiet dedication.
Born in a remote mountain town in southwest China, Bo’s early years were shaped by the spirit of service—his parents were stationed there during the 1960s and 70s as part of a national initiative to establish industrial infrastructure in preparation for possible global conflict. This formative environment instilled in Bo a strong work ethic and sense of purpose.
With the family's return to Shanghai in 1987, Bo pursued chemical engineering at Shanghai University. His talents quickly led him to a prestigious role at the No. 26 Research Centre, where he contributed for eight years to cutting-edge projects in industrial materials and electronic design, including critical support for China’s space programs.
In 2001, Bo brought his skills and aspirations to Australia, recruited through an international agency. While his initial role was curtailed due to outsourcing, Bo embraced the opportunity for reinvention, choosing to stay and build a life in his new country.
Since 2013, Bo has been a key figure at the Balwyn Evergreen Centre. Starting as a bus driver, he steadily earned the respect of his colleagues and now serves as Operations Lead, where his calm leadership and practical knowledge have made him indispensable. He worked closely with Ken McQualter for over a decade, forging a trusted partnership based on mutual respect and shared values.
Bo has a keen interest in information technology and takes great pride in his family. He is the devoted father of two sons—one working at a U.S. investment firm in Hong Kong, and the other pursuing computer science studies at RMIT after excelling in Year 12.
TIPS TO AVOID SCAMS: HOW TO STAY SAFE
Scams are everywhere, targeting people from all walks of life and costing Australians billions of dollars each year. Whether it’s fake emails, unexpected phone calls or online schemes, scammers always find new ways to gain your trust and steal your money or personal information. But the three simple steps below can help keep us all safe from scammers.
A beautifully warm morning—the warmest in days—greeted stallholders and early patrons as the sun rose, setting the tone for a vibrant and successful market day. Despite a minor hiccup with the Officer in Charge sleeping in and arriving just after 6:30 am, the set-up team worked efficiently and had everything ready well before 7:00 am. A fantastic team effort!
The mild temperatures and brilliant sunshine drew a strong crowd early, and patron support remained steady throughout the morning. The central walkway, buzzing with stallholders and visitors, created a lively and welcoming atmosphere that added to the day’s positive energy.
There were, however, a couple of minor setbacks. Unfortunately, Police were called to manage an altercation between two patrons, with one asked to leave the market. Additionally, during the split-shift changeover, two Rotarians forgot to pass on their worksheets to their replacements, causing a bit of confusion.
These incidents were far outweighed by the overall success of the day. Pack-down ran just as smoothly as the set-up, thanks to the continued teamwork and dedication of all involved. A big thank you to all Rotarians who contributed to the day’s success.
Gate takings came in just under $2,000—a little surprising given the strong turnout, but still a solid result.
