  • Brad Spicer – Horse Racing
    Brad Spicer – Horse Racing

Brad Spicer is the Managing Director of Spicer Thoroughbreds. A plumber by trade, Brad had always been fascinated by the thoroughbred but knew that a career transition would take careful planning and dedication. Before making the leap, Brad spent countless mornings at track work in the Flemington trainer’s tower working alongside Leon Corstens, former right-hand man of the iconic trainer Bart Cummings. He spent eight years working alongside legendary yearling buyer George Smith at yearling sales and soaked up as much information as he could, honing his eye and refining his own selection criteria. Since 2005, Brad’s reputation as a yearling buyer has grown each season thanks to Group 1 winners Starspangledbanner, an international champion sprinter and successful stallion, 1000 Guineas winner Commanding Jewel, Derby winner Zabeelionaire, Mackinnon Stakes winner Awesome Rock, and 2018 Victoria Derby winner Extra Brut, as well as countless Group and Listed performers and metropolitan winners. Today, Spicer Thoroughbreds has transformed from yearling syndicator to a full-service bloodstock management business, overseeing the portfolios of private clients locally and internationally with more than 50 horses under management both on the track and in the breeding barn. With significant international links, the business has an exceptional record of recruiting international talent with Group 1 winner Kings Will Dream an example of the quality that Brad and his team have sourced for clients. “When I started this business, I wanted to create a team mentality for our staff and our clients, and I can proudly say we’ve done that. We strive for elite results and we work with great people, I can’t think of a better way to enjoy racing,” Brad Spicer.

  • Kate Thwaites – Enough is Enough
Kate Thwaites – Enough is Enough

Kate Thwaites, in conjunction with Jenny Macklin, is the author of Enough is Enough. Kate was elected the Member for Jagajaga at the 2019 federal election. Kate is a former ABC TV and Radio news reporter and has held senior roles at Oxfam and in the Victorian Public Service. She worked for Jenny Macklin to help deliver important Labor reforms, including the National Disability Insurance Scheme and Paid Parental Leave. Kate is also working to tackle the other serious challenges that face our country: rising social inequality, constitutional recognition of Australia’s First Peoples, and fixing the National Disability Insurance Scheme. "What is it about the culture and structure of Parliament House that has allowed sexual violence and harassment to flourish? As women, we believe in the power of politics to do good, and as feminists we recognise that politics is about power: getting it, holding onto it, and using it to improve citizens’ lives. Women wielding power in Parliament House, women fighting for equality and an end to discrimination across our country, have made their mark and they have caused change. But the underlying problem of men’s attitudes towards women, of men believing it is their right to assault or harass women, remains. For this to change, men will have to give up some of the harmful ways in which they use power—in the parliament and in our community. We are calling for actions to have consequences, and for an end to a culture of political impunity. We want to seize this moment to do the unfinished work—to make sure that women are not just in the room, but that they are safe there. We say enough is enough."
