Charlotte Sterrett aka Yarra Riverkeeper has been a passionate advocate for climate and environmental justice here in Australia and overseas for some 20 years. She is recognised globally for her work supporting local communities in the Asia-Pacific region build their resilience to climate change. She has published extensively on the importance of community-based approaches to development.
As the Yarra Riverkeeper, Charlotte brings her many talents working with grassroots organisations, non-governmental organisations and government to advocate for the Yarra/Birrarung to be healthy, protected and loved. She says its her dream job!
Charlotte lives by the river in Warrandyte and takes every opportunity to swim and canoe in the Yarra/Birrarung. She also loves paddling other rivers in Victoria (she has a special fondness for the Mitchell River from her outdoor education days taking children rafting down the largest of Victoria’s wild rivers). Charlotte sees the Yarra/Birrarung as the lifeblood of Melbourne and a perfect place to place to connect to nature. Part of her motivation of working as the Yarra Riverkeeper is to encourage people to be more connected to the river and to respect it as a living entity with rights of its own.
The Yarra Riverkeeper Association (YRKA) is an organisation that supports and shares the many community voices along the Yarra River, also known as Birrarung. We are an independent, community led organisation of advocates who represent and protect this iconic Melbourne waterway. As Melbourne’s population grows, the river is coming under increasing environmental pressure, pollution and habitat fragmentation. Riverkeepers are vital to keeping the Yarra healthy.

Tue 6th Dec
6-DECA tour has been booked at Brickworks Shopping Centre, 70 Middleborough Rd, Burwood East at 11am on Tuesday 6th Dec followed by lunch in a centre restaurant as our Tuesday Social event for December. Our 1 hour tour commences on Level 1 of the Management Centre at 11am. The tour will be conducted by Peter Carter, Operations Manager who will show us around Burwood Brickworks: the world's first retail Living Building. Sustainability set at a gold standard. The centre has been developed by Frasers Property Australia and includes roof top gardens as a state of the art building development that fits with shifts in demographics, climate and lifestyle in a social and environmentally friendly development. A living building is one that gives more than it takes, leaves a positive legacy on the site it occupies, and which operates as beautifully and efficiently as a flower. Burwood Brickworks Shopping Centre by Frasers Property Australia, is the first retail centre to attempt – and achieve – Living Building Challenge® Petal Certification, the world’s most rigorous measure of the built environment administered by The International Living Future Institute (ILFI). Hopefully you are now interested enough to come along to our Tuesday Social Event which for a change is a Lunch rather than a Dinner and a very interesting new building development to explore!
