To recognize the importance of global environmental sustainability, the Rotary Clubs of Balwyn and Geelong conduct a Postgraduate Global Environmental Sustainability (PGES) Awards Program.
The awards are for students enrolled in at least the second year of a PhD program (by research), in an area related to environmental sustainability, and are intended to assist the recipients to attend and present their research results at an international conference, held in Australia or overseas. The conference must be held between 1 January, 2018 and 31 December, 2018.
The value of the awards will normally be within the range $1,000 – $2,500.
The 2018 application round focused on students pursuing research in science and engineering in areas related to Global Environmental Sustainability.
Students must be Australian citizens in at least the second year of a research-based PhD program at a recognised university in Victoria. They must be presenting a paper (talk or poster) at the conference. Confirmation of the conference presentation will be required prior to an award being made
The award will be made on the basis of the academic record of the student, the quality of the application, the relevance of the conference to the student’s research and the international standing of the conference. As indicated above, the 2018 application round will focus on students pursuing research in science and engineering in areas related to Global Environmental Sustainability.
Condition of Award
Successful applicants will:
- be expected to provide a brief written report in which they indicate how attendance at the conference was of benefit to their research work, and
- if required attend a meeting of the Rotary Club of Balwyn or Geelong and give a brief presentation describing, in terms suitable to the lay person, the content of their presentation at the conference and how the conference was of value to their studies.

The conference is a weekend long camp designed at developing young people’s potential through a mixture of lecture style sessions and adventure- based learning. RYPEN National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) runs annual residential programs to encourage young people in their passion for science. It gives year 12 students a broader understanding of the diverse study and career options available in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and encourages them to continue their studies in these fields. - Four Way Test Public Speaking Competition
The Four Way Test Public Speaking Competition is based on similar competitions that had been run by a number of Clubs over many years. The objectives are to provide a competitive outlet for secondary students attending schools within the City of Boroondara to hone their public speaking skills and promote the Rotary Four Way Test to secondary students as a moral compass—a positive way of living their lives.
- Boroondara Literary Awards
The Boroondara Literary Awards are run in conjunction with the Boroondara Council. Held annually since 1999, they are a great way of unearthing local talent and inspiring people to be creative.
